Clifton has its annual chili cook-off. Now chili’s Kentucky cousin burgoo will have its day, as Against the Grain Brewery and Smokehouse prepares to play host to what it says is the first burgoo cook-off ever in Louisville on March 19.

Burgoo Bowl: a Pro-Am Cook-off is a culinary competition aimed at bringing out the best amateur and professional burgoo makers in the region. A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit APRON Inc., according to a news release.

Burgoo, the uniquely Kentucky stew, can be interpreted in a multitude of ways and all versions are welcome at the Burgoo Bowl. Participants will compete for top honors in three categories: most creative recipe, people’s choice and best of show, as chosen by a panel of celebrity judges.  Prizes include trophies, gift certificates and, more importantly, burgoo bragging rights.

The competition is open to the first 20 participants with 15 spots reserved for home chefs and 5 spots for restaurant entrants. For only $10 per person entry fee, attendees will get to taste all of the burgoos and vote on their favorite one.

APRON is a local non-profit assisting professional food and beverage workers in the Louisville metro area working at locally-owned establishments and who are experiencing financial distress due to illness, accident, emergency or catastrophic events through no fault of their own.

The Burgoo Bowl begins at 3 p.m. Against the Grain is located at 401 East Main St. For rules and regulations, visit: https://atgbrewery.com/event/burgoo-bowl-cook-off-2022-03-19/
