V-Grits Moving to Logan Street Market; to Reopen in March

Operating for four and a half years at the corner of Barret Avenue and Winter, in between the Highlands and Germantown; Louisville’s staple vegan restaurant V-Grits is packing up and moving just one mile down the road, but to a much smaller location.

“It’s apparent most small businesses are struggling right now, as so many restaurants and bars have shut down entirely in the last few months,” said owner Kristina Addington in a news release. “Closing the business was a serious consideration for us too. Sales are down in the restaurant industry and the cost of everything we purchase has gone up.”

V-Grits opened the brick and mortar restaurant in 2018, after operating a food truck, a meal service, and wholesaling products to grocery stores since 2014. The restaurant’s most popular dishes include a hot chicken sandwich, crunch-wrap, and macaroni and cheese, all made vegan. Kristina Addington started V-Grits (an acronym for vegan-girl-raised-in-the south) after winning the Food Network competition Cutthroat Kitchen in 2014.

“Moving V-Grits to Logan Street Market will allow us to continue operating and providing fast casual vegan comfort food to our long term customer base, and to brand new customers who are interested in trying vegan food,” Addington said. “We have always wanted to bridge the gap between Louisville’s typical comfort fare like hot browns and BBQ, to vegan options that are better for the planet, our health, and the animals, all while giving us a sentimental comfort food satisfaction we seek out with our taste buds.”

Addington and her partner Jeff Hennis opened Chimera Brewing Company in 2020 inside the same location at Barret Avenue. The brewery will not follow V-Grits to Logan Street Market. The brewing operation previously was known as False Idol.

“The mission and passion behind Chimera was not only providing incredible craft beer, but also donating a portion of every sale to local nonprofits supporting racial equity, foster care, food justice, animal rights, and more,” Hennis said. “We’re sad to see that end”

Chimera will cease operations on Feb. 26. Until then, all pints of beer, to-go crowlers and growler fills are deeply discounted.

V-Grits will open in March joining dozens of locally owned food, beverage and artisan shops inside Logan Street Market.
