Book Signing Event at Mickey’s in New Albany
Thanks to the News and Tribune for writing about my book event at Mickey’s in New Albany. I started my career there and am so thankful for the experience.
Oskar’s Slider Bar to Close Temporarily; Grind Reopens
Oskar’s Slider Bar will close temporarily while owners Jesse and Liz Huot make repairs, according to a Facebook post on the restaurant’s page. The post said the Scandanavian-themed eatery will close “for the next few weeks” to take care of plumbing and bar top issues.
Classic Content: Brain Farts, Clown Suits and Detergencies
This column was written for LEO Weekly in February 2005 for my series known as Brain Farts. I still think “Detergency” would be a great name for a detergent. Few agree. Also, one name has been omitted to protect those who wanted nothing to do with this in the first place.
Trifecta’s Pizza/Salads/Burritos Combo is a Different Kind of Fast Casual
They say it’s tough to try to be all things to all people, but Trifecta on lower Brownsboro Road is sure trying to be a lot of things to a lot of people. The build-your-own offers a trilogy of core options — thin, New York-style pizza, fresh salads and a burrito bar — with a surprising number of options for mixing and matching.
Book Excerpt: Falls City Brewing and Louisville Brewing’s Last Stand
Since I’m doing a book signing event on Thursday at Falls City Brewing Company, I thought it would be fun to share this excerpt from my 2014 book, “Louisville Beer: Derby City History on Draft.” This is chapter 12 from that book, detailing the history of Falls City starting with its inception in 1905.
Classic Content: Gum Surgery and Don Henley Go Together … Like Peas and Manure
I’ve never been a fan of going to the dentist. And let’s face it, how many times have you heard anyone say, “Hey, I’ve got the day off today, the weather’s great and I’ve got some extra money saved up – I think I’ll go have a root canal!”? Exactly.
The Taste Bud: Not Just ‘Regular Old Crackers;’ Clemmie Helps Make the Sale
Back in the early 1980s, Eddie Murphy released a memorable stand-up comedy film titled “Raw” that included a joke about “regular old crackers.” This has nothing to do with the topic Murphy explored so, er, delicately (?), but snacking on Savory Fine Foods-brand Spicy Guacamole “party” crackers evokes the punchline from the bit. As in, they’re not just regular old crackers.
Ramiro’s Cantina Express in Jeffersonville? Yes, Please
I first went to Ramiro’s Cantina Express not long after it opened — what? Two years ago? Three? Time is a blur in the wake of a worldwide pandemic. But I’m glad I finally went back, because it’s better than your average fast casual restaurant.
Road Trip: New Old Breweries, Burgers and Big Views
There aren’t many things I enjoy more than checking out a new brewery. Took a day trip on Sunday to Columbus, Ind., and visited one that borders on being a must-see if you’re up that way: The Upland Pump House.
Taqueria Los Gorditos Means More Tacos in Clifton Heights
For most of the years I have lived in the Clifton neighborhood, there had been an absence of traditional taqueria-style food. All of a sudden, we have three in a two block space.
